Odisha govt to assess infra gap in colleges, teacher education institutions

The higher education department of the state plans to conduct a thorough evaluation of the existing infrastructure in government degree colleges and teacher education institutes (TEIs). The objective of this assessment is to understand the current state of physical facilities, identify areas for improvement, and determine potential challenges faced by these institutions. The government aims to strategically enhance the campus environment and improve the overall learning experience for students across the state.

To begin this evaluation process, the department has requested principals of government degree colleges and TEIs to assess the infrastructure of their respective institutions and provide basic requirements. The information should be submitted in a google sheet format within seven days. The form should include the college’s name, contact details, and total land area. Additionally, details such as the number of students, regular and self-financed courses offered, and student strength against each course should be provided.

The infrastructure section of the form should cover various aspects including available buildings with the number of rooms, laboratory conditions, drinking water and toilet facilities, accessibility features, drainage systems, library, reading room, and multipurpose hall. Authorities should also indicate the availability of auditoriums/seminar halls, hostels for girls and boys with bed capacity, boundary walls, playgrounds, sports complexes, internet connectivity, parking areas, staff quarters, and other amenities.

Finally, college and TEI principals should detail the specific requirements of their institutions, providing justification for each need. The state currently has 49 government degree colleges and 16 TEIs. According to an official from the higher education department, many colleges lack proper laboratory facilities, sports complexes, and other necessary amenities. The government will utilize the collected information to plan the development of these institutions, ultimately aiding them in achieving good grades in the assessment conducted by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
